Career Valet on How I Built This with Guy Raz

I took a chance.

When my husband was offered a position with the Foreign Service over a decade ago and we said yes to moving around the world every few years, despite our first child having just been born.

When I launched Career Valet the following year from Uzbekistan to continue my own career.

When I blindly reached out to U.S. News and World Report to inquire about writing for their On Careers blog.

When I co-founded a second business, ServingTalent, in 2015 while in Chile with two young children, pushing a market that wasn’t ready for remote workers or our candidate pool.

When I continued to lead both companies through the birth of our third child, and then closed ServingTalent in 2019.

When I reached out to countless people, companies, events, and media outlets to ask to discuss partnerships and our services. I was met with a lot of silence and rejections.

When I uploaded an audio clip in response to an ad from my favorite podcast, How I Built This (though a voice in my head said, “they almost always feature product, not service businesses like ours, so you won’t be picked.”)

And guess what? I got to be on my favorite show!

I can't quite explain how surreal it was to be talking to the host, Guy Raz, who I'd been listening to for years. He's of NPR fame and has interviewed countless big company founders and celebrities on his podcasts. Let's just say I had to shake out my nerves by jumping around pre-recording and take a lot of deep breaths before it was my turn.

I talked about Career Valet and got incredible advice from Guy and Maureen Kelly of Tarte Cosmetics. Listen here on Apple Podcasts or on your favorite podcast app.

And a piece of advice from me to you? Take a chance.
