Who doesn’t want flexibility when it comes to work? Many of us grew up with a “live to work” mentality, but now we’re seeing a shift to “work to live” instead. It’s incredibly refreshing to see this along with the rise of remote work. But most people wonder how to get and where to find jobs that allow you to work from anywhere.
Employers are looking for 5 key attributes, not all of which are easy to show on paper or online, but are a must.
Experience working from home successfully. Some people worked from home for years prior to the pandemic. Many had never worked from home before. Either way, it’s important to give examples of your remote work, whether it was for a short or long period.
Accountability. The biggest obstacle employers see when it comes to assessing whether to allow remote work is if they can trust someone. What examples can you give from your work history that demonstrate responsibility and accountability for projects you’ve taken on either remotely or in an office?
Communication. This is where the biggest challenges lie as remote culture spreads. Communication is almost always an issue when in person, so it’s not hard to imagine why this creates an even bigger problem for remote teams. If you’re a strong verbal and written communicator, present examples in your materials. The ability to communicate with staff at all levels is important.
Collaboration. It goes without saying that strong collaboration skills are high on the list as well. Good collaboration and communication go hand in hand. Where have you shown strong collaboration skills and what did it involve?
Adaptability. Teams are comprised of staff across geographies and time zones. Have you worked on diverse teams, in terms of professional and/or cultural background? How do you stay connected to colleagues who you don’t work with or see daily? Perhaps you can give examples of when you’ve demonstrated comfort with changing priorities. All of this shows flexibility.
