Small Goals to Live By

I recently came across this beautiful image in Canva, but as I started reading the circles, I felt anxious.

According to StrengthsFinder, my #1 trait is “achiever,” and yet this graphic still felt stressful to me. Why? Because it’s too much. There are too many goals. It’s too much to ask of yourself.

Now I realize that this may be simply presenting ideas for you to choose from as you think about what you want in the new year. OK, that makes me breathe a bit easier, but the way it’s presented makes me feel overwhelmed.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the start of the new year and hearing or reading about everyone’s new year’s resolutions, I encourage you to first breathe…and then decide on ONE area of your life where you want to make a change. What is it that you want to do this year in that area?

If you’re feeling ambitious, make that your goal for the first 4 months of the year (i.e., quarter 1). Then select another area of your life and what you want this year in that area, and so on for each quarter of the year.

Keep each one simple. Life is busy, messy, and filled with uncertainty. Don’t overreach with your goals so far that you feeling like you’re constantly falling. That’s not a good mindset going into a new year.

Start small, start simple and go from there.
